PREP: Douglas girls pummel Wooster

After starting the game extremely cold from the floor, the Douglas girls basketball team found its rhythm in a big way Tuesday night en route to a 64-21 thumping of Wooster in a Sierra League matchup in Minden.The two teams had battled to a 4-4 tie through the first six minutes of the game and Wooster managed to crawl out to a 12-10 lead with three minutes remaining before halftime before the Tiger offense woke up.Douglas scored 27 of the game’s next 30 points, rolling off an 8-0 lead to close out the half and then outscoring the Colts 25-5 in the third quarter with the help of a strong pressure defense.“Those first four minutes, we just didn’t look very fluid,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “We were rushing stuff, but they were in the right spots and making good decisions. We anticipated some of those home-opener jitters, but once they settled down, they looked really good.”The frontcourt had a big night across the board with Diana Regalado scoring 14 points, Desiree Cage scoring 12 and Leonna Mortimer adding 10.Kelly Sonnemann chipped in nine, Corryne Millett and Yvette Schlee each had six and McKenna Kynett added four.Douglas improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Northern Division I play. The Tigers will host South Tahoe Friday night at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALLDouglas 70, Wooster 43Douglas cruised to a 70-43 win over Wooster to improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in league play on the young season.“We struggled a little bit in the first half and turned the ball over a little too much, but the kids pulled together,” Douglas coach Corey Thacker said.Douglas’ defense was strong throughout, particularly when it came to Wooster’s standout guard DeShaun Pugsley, who finished with 11 points.“The kids did a really good job of keeping him from going off, because he is capable of doing that,” Thacker said. “All our team defense on him was nice. He’s a great player. He put up 28 in his last game. He’s good off the dribbled and a strong shooter from outside. We held him to one 3-poitner tonight. Our defenders just as a whole did a good job with him.”Offensively, Douglas managed just 27 points in the first half as the shots from outside just weren’t falling. The bulk of the Tigers’ scoring came inside with Hunter Myers leading the way at 28 points.“You have to credit our guards,” Thacker said. “The shots weren’t falling, so they just started pounding the ball inside and they didn’t stop. Joe Syammach, Pat Johnson and Austin Evans each hit a 3-pointer, so we weren’t completely dry, but as a team we did a good job getting it inside.”Douglas will play an extended stretch on the road with at least 11 games away before settling into the thick of the league race.Freshmen GIRLS basketballCARSON 48, GALENA 17RENO — Melissa Glanzmann scored 16 points, and Serena Miller added 11 as the Carson freshmen girls beat Galena on Tuesday.Miller added three steals, five assists and eight rebounds. Baily Allen added seven steals and seven rebounds to compliments six points. Carson returns to action at the Spanish Springs tournament this weekend. JV BOYS BASKETBALLGALENA 46, CARSON 45Galena came up with a defensive stop on the last play of the game to hold on for a win over Carson.Asa Carter led Carson with 15 points and Robby Miller added eight. Cody Azevedo and Brandon Ruf added six apiece.
