CHS-DHS rivalry best in state

Everybody in Northern Nevada knows how big the Carson-Douglas rivalry is. Well, it appears the entire state knows what a big deal it is.

In a contest being conducted by USA Today, the Senators and Tigers were the winner of the best rivalry in the state by carrying 86 percent of the vote. The Moapa Valley-Virgin Valley rivalry was second with 11 percent of the vote and the Bishop Gorman-Palo Verde rivalry was third with 3 percent.

The 51 state winners now advance to four regional competitions. Voting is now under way in the regional competition. All voting is conducted on line at usatodayhss.com. Obviously Carson and Douglas are in the West region. The regional voting ends on Dec. 12, and the four regional winners advance to a final vote-off. The overall national champion will receive $10,000 which would be split between the two athletic departments, and according to reports, USA today will report live at the 2013 rivalry football game.

"I think it's great," Carson football coach Blair Roman said. "I think my mom probably voted 100 times. It would be great if we could win the regional competition."

Roman has seen the rivalry from both sides. He played quarterback at Douglas High and is the current coach at Carson.

"I just think people notice what a good solid rivalry is," Douglas athletic director Jeff Evans told the Record Courier. "Moapa and Virgin Valley is a pretty good rivalry, I remember that from my time down in Vegas, but it was pretty cool to see the Carson and Douglas communities come together and make this happen.
