PREP: Carson girls win second straight

RENO - Carson High's girls basketball team used a big second quarter to pound Summerville 69-36 in a first-round game at the Winter Classic at Reno High School.

Carson, 2-1, plays Elko tonight at 7:30.

Carson led just 11-10 after the first period, but then outscored Summerville, 28-14, in the second quarter to take a 39-24 lead at the half.

Carson outscored the Bears 30-6 in the second half.

"That's the best we've played," Carson coach Nathan Tolbert said. "We ran our spread offense and we pressured them a lot and forced turnover which led to lay-ups."

Elena Thurman was superb at both ends of the floor. She finished with 20 points and Madison Preston added 13,

"Elena did a great job all the way around," Tolbert said.

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

Bishop 52, Dayton 50

The Dayton varsity boys team lost its opening round game in the Sutro Classic, 52-50, to Bishop. Austin Fletcher led the Dust Devils 14 points.

Coach Jason Santos said turnovers and a lack of execution hurt the Dust Devils. Santos said the Dust Devils also were outrebounded.

Dayton plays Rite of Passage at 7:30 p.m. today in the tournament.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

LASSEN 47, CARSON 40

Lassen's inside game was too much for the Carson girls as they lost their first game of the year 47-40 to Lassen on Thursday.

Lassen had a 6-foot 6-inch center who coach Mike Petterson said was a "one woman wrecking crew in the first half."

Carson found itself in a 29-18 hole at halftime before storming back to tie the game after three quarters.

Leading Carson was Michelle Perry with 10 points. Ivy Pembrook added 8 points.

On Tuesday, Carson knocked off Galena 40-24. Perry led the offense with 14 points, while Natalie Young was the top rebounder with nine.

FRESHMEN BASKETBALL

CARSON 59, LASSEN 52

Serena Miller scored 26 points to lead the Carson freshmen girls to a 59-52 win Thursday night.

Miller added three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Bailey Allen scored 11 points and had four steals. Taylor Weddell added five rebounds and three steals.

The girls return to action today against Douglas at Reno High.
