Prep roundup: Carson advances 7 wrestlers in Vegas

Kyle Sharp, Cole McCarthy, Jordan Luhrs and Brady Rivera all went 3-0 to advance through the quarterfinals of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Friday. After the first day Carson has seven wrestlers alive in the tournament. The Senators are currently eighth out of more than 60 teams.Coach Tim McCarthy characterized the days as “good, but not great.” Sharp had two pins in advancing to the semifinals at 122 pounds. McCarthy had three pins in advancing in the 134-pound bracket. Luhrs had one pin advancing in the 172-pound weight class. Rivera had two pins in the 184-pound bracket. “They all have a tough road ahead of them,” McCarthy said about potential meet champions. “There still are some studs left.”Nicolas Lani lost his first match before winning four straight to stay alive in the 140-pound bracket. He had three pins on the day.Brady O’Keefe lost his first match before coming back with three straight pins and another win to stay alive in the 147-pound bracket.Javier Torres lost his first match before winning three straight to stay alive for a potential third place finish at 197 pounds.“We had a rough first round,” McCarthy said. “We got it going in the second and third rounds.”Sammy Mercado went 2-2 at 115 pounds. Mercado won his first two matches before being eliminated. Nolan Shine lost his first match before winning three straight. He was eliminated in the last round of the first day in the 154-pound bracket.Colby Brown went 2-2 in the tournament wrestling at 162 pounds. Brown had two pins on the day. BOYS BASKETBALLDAYTON GOES 1-1 Dayton dropped its opening game in the Rail City Classic in Sparks to McQueen Friday night.The Lancers won 71-25. Leading the Dust Devils was Bernardo Macias with 12 points. Jake Turner added six points.On Thursday, Dayton topped Gonzales (CA), 54-50. Taryn Aguilera led the team with 19 points. Dayton returns to action at 1 p.m. today.
