More than 90 crashes were investigated by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers in Northern Nevada over a 20-hour period ending 6 a.m. Thursday.Of the 92 crashes, 33 involved injuries, although only three were in Carson City, one was in Fallon, another in Fernley and two in the Lake Tahoe area, NHP spokesman Trooper Chuck Allen said. Most of the crashes happened in the Reno area. In addition to the high volume of crashes, NHP also responded to 54 other calls, ranging from spinouts and slide-outs to slide-offs and mechanical failures in the blistering cold. One collision in Reno sent two men to the hospital, one of whom had a “very serious injury to his leg” after a truck, unable to slow down on the slick freeway near the Victorian Avenue exit in Sparks, smashed him into the concrete barrier, pinning his leg.The man with the leg injury was driving his Dodge pickup on Interstate 80 when he lost traction and spun out and stopped spinning with his truck facing the wrong direction. Shortly thereafter his truck was struck by a Toyota pickup, blocking one lane. Both the drivers were outside of their trucks when a third truck, a Chevrolet, hit the driver of the Dodge, according to NHP.The drivers of the Toyota and the Dodge were taken to the hospital, although the driver of the Toyota only sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Chevy pickup escaped injury.
