COMMUNITY: Baseball, softball clinics scheduled

If you're interested in improving your baseball or softball skills, the Krush Hitting Co. and Dream Team Softball Camp might help.

Both clinics are being scheduled for Feb. 22-26 at Line Drive U, 2577 Nowlin Road in Minden.

Billy Kehoe handles the baseball clinic. Dena (Tyson) Slye, an all-American at the University of Washington, handles the softball clinic.

The age group ranges from 8 to 18, and campers will be grouped with campers of similar ages.

The softball sessions will run from Feb. 22-24 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 each day, and on Feb. 25 from 8 to noon.

The baseball sessions will run from Feb. 22-24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each day, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 25.

There is also a coaches clinic Q and A session on Feb. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. free of charge.

Free throw winners announced by K of C

Seven local student-athletes were named district champions at the recent 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The seven winners now advance to the regional competition March 10 at Bishop Manogue in Reno.

Colton Schafer (10), Jonny Randall (11), Johnny Lockard (12), Malcolm Jackson (13) and Julian Alvarado (14) won on the boys' side.

On the girls' side, Lauren Hudak (12) and Anna Mercer (14) were crowned champions.


Bighorns looking for host families

The Nevada Bighorns collegiate baseball team is looking for families to host the out-of-state players on the team this year.

Players would start arriving the last week of May and the season ends the first week of August. The team is expecting between nine and 15 out-of-state players this year.

The Bighorns will be hosting a meeting Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room at the Plaza Hotel in Carson City.


Reno Aces hiring for 2012 season

The Reno Aces Baseball Club is hiring for a plethora of positions for the 2012 season.

The Aces - who begin the 2012 season on Thursday, April 5 at Aces Ballpark - are hiring for guest services guides, valet attendants, maintenance workers and custodial staff members.

Additionally, the club is searching for cameramen and audio operators, on-field entertainment crew, marketing and promotions interns and ticket-office employees. Levy Restaurants - the Aces Ballpark concessionaire - will be offering food-service positions.

In all, more than 300 people for the 2012 season.

Applications for ballpark operations and Levy Restaurants positions will be accepted at the Aces Ballpark security office on Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon beginning Feb. 13. Applications for several other positions - including production team members, ticket-office employees, entertainment crew and interns - are being accepted now. Men's club at Dayton seeks members

The Dayton Valley Palmer Club, the men's golf club at Dayton Valley Golf Club, is open to public membership and now accepting applications for the 2012 season.

Any area male golfer age 18 or older can join by paying annual dues of $250. Dues for members who have a NNGA handicap with another golf club are $220.

The dues fee includes NNGA/GHIN number and handicap and entry into 10 tournaments including a Skins Game, Club Championship and two-day Member-Member tournament with four 9-hole formats. Also on the schedule are the Member-Guest and Annual Match Play Championship that require nominal additional entry fees. Palmer Club members also receive a discounted green fee on tournament days.

The season begins on March 17 with a 4-Man Green Ball/Scramble tournament.
