Dance club presents Swing Into Spring

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its fifth-annual Swing Into Spring dinner-dance gala and "Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance" contest on April 28 at the Carson City Nugget.

No-host cocktails are at 6 p.m., celebrity dancers' contest is at 6:30 p.m., sit-down dinner is served at 7 p.m. and dancing to a variety of DJ musicstarts at 8 p.m.

Explore Latvia at the library

The Carson City Library will present Explore Latvia @ Your Library at 6 p.m. on March 8 in the library auditorium.

Ursula Carlson Ph.D., will present Latvia: Rebirth and Slow Death of a Nation. Carlson was born in Aluksne, Latvia. As a young child, she lived as a displaced refugee in various camps in Eastern Europe and West Germany.

She grew up in Greenville, Mich., where she graduated from high school.

She studied literature and writing, receiving her BA from Michigan State University, M.F.A. in creative writing from the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa and her Ph.D. from the University of Detroit, a Jesuit university. She has taught full time at Western Nevada College for 18 years, and serves as a board member for the Community Counseling Center.

Explore the World @ Your Library is a bimonthly program and hosts a series of presentations about other countries by those who have traveled to far-away places.

Previous countries that have been explored through this popular series include Hong Kong, Nicaragua, England, Israel, Bolivia, Columbia, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Taiwan, the Azores, Portugal, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Afghanistan, Ireland, Tunisia, South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Russia, and China.
