Battle Born State: All the states and territories are increasing in population and wealth with the single exception of Nevada. The census of last year could only make out a population of 62,266 counting Chinese and Indians. (from the Star, Washington, D.C. Dec. 31, 1881.)

Eleventh census: An eastern editor writes about how women figure in the eleventh census. He should bear in mind that but for the ladies there would be no census.

Photo caption: The air raid shelter is being mass produced and is bolted on a concrete base. Ventilation comes at the top where the cone crowns the steel pyramid. This will accommodate 13 people. With air raid alerts on both coasts, interest is increasing - can be bought for as little as $200.

50 YEARS AGO

Governor Grant Sawyer proclaims Jan. 1 as Foster Parent Day in Nevada to help double the number of overseas children aided by the Foster Parents' Plan. "This great experiment in direct door-to-child giving stars its 25th year of service to child victims of war and want in Europe." (Foster parents do not legally adopt.. they provide $15 a month.)

Harold Holder is the new owner for Sharkey's Nugget in Gardnerville. Holder purchased the casino from Milos "Sharkey" Begovich who had run it for 31 years.
