Carson girls basketball coach Todd Ackerman hopes his team has finally turned the proverbial corner.

Carson won its fifth straight game, 63-26, over outmanned Wooster Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson is 7-9 overall and is 3-0 in games against Sierra League opponents.

"I hope we have (turned the corner)," Ackerman said. "We have a lot of room for improvement. We have a lot of things we need to do better. All that matters is winning right now.

"I didn't know what to expect out of Wooster. The only game I'd seen them on tape they shot the ball better. I was happy with our effort. Our press gave them some problems."

Eight of Carson's first 10 points came after Wooster mistakes, as the Senators' double-team tactics definitely had the Colts rattled.

The carnage continued in the second quarter.

Eliza Matley had a three-point play and Savannah Smith had a basket and free throw to lead a 9-0 run en route to a 22-4 lead.

After Wooster scored four unanswered points, Carson scored 11 unanswered for a 33-8 lead. Matley, who scored all 14 of her points in the first half, had a trey and a layup. Emily Collins had a rare four-point play. She drained a 3-pointer and was fouled on the play, and then hit the ensuing foul shot.

Two free throws by Matley stretched the lead to 36-10 before Wooster's Alexes Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer to make it 36-13 at the half.

Ackerman admitted the game got a little sloppy on both sides in the second period.

"That happens sometimes (when you get a big lead)," Ackerman said. "We came out in the second half firing well."

That's an understatement.

Carson opened the second half with a 13-2 run for a 49-15 lead. Nine of the points were by Smith, who finished with a team-high 16. She put an exclamation point on the surge with a nice 3-pointer.

"Savannah played well," Ackerman said. "She needed to have a good game."

Carson returns to action Tuesday at Bishop Manogue at 6 p.m.

"That's going to be a battle," Ackerman said.
