PREP/JC: WNC baseball loses opener 1-0

LAS VEGAS - Western Nevada College dropped a season-opening 1-0 decision to South Mountain College Friday afternoon.

The teams resume their four-game series today at 11 with two 7-inning games.

"It's pretty tough to beat a team when they don't make an error and walk only one batter in nine innings," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "South Mountain made some good defensive plays."

WNC managed just four hits, two by Chris Woolley and one each by Neil Lawhorn and Mike Umscheid.

The Wildcats threatened in the ninth when Woolley was walked, but forced at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Taylor Smart. A wild pitch and infield out moved Smart to third, but he was stranded.

The Wildcats got strong pitching from three of their returnees - Andrew Woeck, Matt Robertson and Anthony Consiglio.

Woeck worked the first three, allowing the only run. He Fanned three and allowed three hits. Robertson worked the next four, allowing only two hits and a walk while fanning two batters. Consiglio worked two scoreless and hitless innings.

SOFTBALL: Wildcats

drop two games

LAS VEGAS - The WNC softball team lost twice at a preseason tournament on Friday. In the first game WNC lost 10-9 to Eastern Arizona.

The Wildcats were leading the game before a couple of breaks went Eastern Arizona's way forcing extra innings. The international tiebreaker went into effect, with WNC scoring one run in the top half of the inning. In the home half of the inning Eastern Arizona scored twice for the win.

WNC pounded out 13 hits, as eight of the Wildcats' nine players recorded one. Ali-Marie Lostra went 4-for-4. Taleas Marble went 2-for-3 and Ashley Gleason went 2-for-4.

Alexia Alley took the loss giving up 10 runs on 11 hits.

In the second game WNC lost 10-3 to Central Arizona. The Wildcats missed some opportunities as they were trailing 5-3 in the fifth inning, but failed to score with the bases loaded and no outs.

In the bottom of the inning Central Arizona padded its lead.

Marble went 2-for-3 and Alia Cox with 1-for-3.

WNC continues tournament play with three games today.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

Dayton boys win in OT

FALLON - For the third time in as many meetings, the Dayton boys basketball team slipped past Fallon.

This time, though, the Dust Devils needed overtime as Dayton held on for a 68-66 3A Lahontan League win on Friday. Dayton was led by Adan Gomez, who scored a game-high 35 points, while teammates Sean deRubertis added 13 and Dylan Taylor chipped in with 11.

Dayton won both of last year's meetings by a combined four points.

Jeff Evett had a team-high 23 points for Fallon, while Beau Marshall added 14 and Dylan Tedford scored 13.

Dayton erased a 34-25 third quarter deficit with an 21-4 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter. deRubertis hit two of his three 3-pointers and Taylor added five points.

Gomez, though, lived at the free throw line, connecting on 18-of-24 attempts.

DeRubertis' 3-pointer with 6 seconds left in the fourth quarter tforced overtime. Fallon's Josh Morrison hit a 3 seconds later, but it was after the clock expired.

In overtime, Gomez scored seven of the Dust Devils eight points including a 3 to ties the game at 63.

With the win, Dayton improves to 4-3 in league and 9-11 overall. Fallon falls to 2-4, 4-14.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fallon girls win

FALLON - In a battle for 3A Lahontan League supremacy, the Fallon girls basketball team slipped past Dayton, 49-38, on Friday.

Dayton tied the game at 19 in the second quarter, but Fallon went on a 9-0 run to close out the half, led Shelby Smith and Shayna Hicks, who each scored four points during the run.

The Dust Devils sliced the Fallon lead to 31-28 after a free throw by Andrea Ramirez, but Fallon countered with three points to end the quarter.

Fallon opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 43-30 with 5 minutes, 25 seconds left in the game. Dayton's Maribel Ledezma cut the gap to 45-38 after consecutive baskets, but Fallon hit 4-of-6 free throws to ice the game.

Ledezma had a game-high 19 points and Cora Mebius and Taylor Hill each scored eight points for Dayton. Fallon was led by 10 points from Jenny Rechel .

JV BASKETBALL

Dayton falls to Fallon

FALLON - The Dayton girls JV basketball team fell 52-38 to Fallon on Friday.

Leading Dayton was Makaila Marshall with 14 points. Muranda Fowler added 11 points.

Carson loses to Douglas

Douglas knocked off Carson 57-43 Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Robby Miller scored 16 to lead Carson.

MINDEN - The Senators got 16 points from Kyle Steele to knock off Douglas Friday afternoon.

Cameron Price added 12.

Carson girls win easily

MINDEN - Maddie Preston and Michelle Perry combined for 30 points to lead Carson to a 55-33 win over Douglas.
