Tax preparers must take competency exam

The Internal Revenue Service said last week that almost 7,000 Nevada tax preparers have registered with the agency as required by recent regulations.

However, more than 3,200 of them must take an IRS competency examination by Dec. 31, 2013, or they will not be able to prepare tax returns for compensation.

The IRS began a program three years ago to register paid tax preparers and require certain preparers to pass a competency test. In addition, paid preparers are expected to take continuing education courses and meet ethics standards.

The IRS will eventually create a publicly searchable database that will allow taxpayers to see if their tax preparers have met IRS standards or to find a tax preparer in their ZIP code area.

The database will also show any credentials held by the preparer, including the new RTRP credential.

Ray Morgan Co. wins $2M contract

Ray Morgan Co. of Nevada and California has been awarded a $2 million contract with Western Nevada College and the University of Nevada, Reno to provide and service 230 multifunctional devices and printers. The contract covers five years and was let after a five-month competitive process involving 16 vendors.

RMC President Greg Martin led the team in the preparation and presentation of the proposal. "We are extremely pleased to be allowed to partner with UNR and WNC to provide the best in print technology and other services at the most competitive prices," Martin said.

Two promoted at Western Title

Mary Dinsmore and Mary Kelsh have been promoted by Western Title Co.

Dinsmore has been promoted to regional tri-county manager. She will oversee Western Title operations in Fernley, Carson City and Douglas County. Kelsh has been promoted to sales representative for the tri-county operation.
