Group to present grant recommendations to Carson supervisors

A community-based application workgroup will present its funding recommendations to Carson City officials Thursday for community support service grants totaling $372,200.

Of that amount, $257,200 would come from the general fund and another $115,000 would be paid from the Question 18 Quality of Life Fund.

Requests from organizations totaled $224,528, but only $185,000 is available from one portion of the general fund.

Supervisors will take up the matter at 2 p.m.

The workgroup is making the following recommendations:

• $35,000 of the $35,000 requested for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

• $38,050 of the $42,000 requested by the Community Counseling Center.

• $20,000 of the $30,000 requested by Partnership Carson City Latino Services.

• $9,000 of the $9,000 requested by Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

• $25,000 of the $25,000 requested by Court Appointed Special Advocates.

• $14,000 of the $14,000 requested by Friends in Service Helping.

• $13,950 of the $13,950 requested by Ormsby Association for Retarded Citizens.

• $7,500 of the $7,500 requested by Capital City Circles Initiative.

• $16,500 of the $16,500 requested by the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.

• $1,000 of the $3,000 requested by the Rural Center for Independent Living.

• $5,000 of the $10,000 requested by Food for Thought.

• Another $72,200 will be given to Partnership Carson City Youth Services from the general fund/youth category.

In addition, the workgroup will recommend that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada receive $115,000 for maintenance of their facility from the Quality of Life Fund.

Members of the Board of Supervisors will study the funding recommendations and base their decisions on projects and programs with the greatest potential for furthering the city's goals while benefiting the community.

Also on Thursday, starting at 8:30 a.m., supervisors are scheduled:

• To appoint Carson City Chamber of Commerce Director Ronni Hannaman to the Carson City Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee for a two-year term ending January 2014.

• To appoint Robert Stansbury to the Carson City Cultural Commission for a three-year term ending January 2015.

• To hear a report from Wes Henderson, director of the Nevada Association of Counties, on the ability of a governing body to continue to function during and after an emergency.

• To introduce an ordinance that would update the current process and procedures for beekeeping within an urban setting.

The change would provide an opportunity for more citizens to keep bees in a healthy and safe environment.

• To present a proclamation for National Public Health Week.

• To approve an agreement giving operational and fiscal control of a Nevada Division of Forestry fire district to the city.

• To approve an Open Space Division Work Program.

• To approve the Open Space Advisory Committee annual activity report for 2011.

As the Board of Health, officials are scheduled to:

• Hear the director's report on Carson City Health and Human Services activities.

• Hear a presentation about the department's newest division, Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

At 5:30 p.m., supervisors are scheduled to reconvene to determine the number of members of the Charter Review Committee from candidates they've nominated.
