LOCAL ROUNDUP: Split decision for Dayton teams

YERINGTON - Dayton High overcame an early 2-0 deficit to knock off Yerington 6-4 in a Northern 3A baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton improved to 4-0 in league heading into cross-over games this weekend at Fernley High School.

Trailing 3-1 entering the third, run-scoring hits by Jack Phillips and Taryn Aguilera tied the game at 3. Dayton went ahead 4-3 in the fourth when Sam Hadley doubled home Cole Hummel. The Dust Devils cored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when Phillips singled, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball.

Phillips picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed just one run.

"It was definitely a big win," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said. "Jack came in and threw real well."

7th to Yerington

YERINGTON - Yerington pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back errors to snap a 2-all tie and beat Dayton 3-2 in a Northern 3A softball game Tuesday afternoon.

Makayla Shadle fanned 14 and allowed just three hits, but it wasn't enough to beat Katie Nicholas, who scattered seven hits to pick up the win.

"It was a tough loss," said Dayton coiach Daven Passalacqua. "Shadle threw very well. Nicholas is a good little pitcher. Her ball has a weird rotation. Sh's been tough against us."

Yerington broke the scoreless tie in the sixth on a double, single, a dropped third strike and a passed ball. Dayton answered back with two of its own thanks to four hits, including run-scoring hits by Kalee Alexander and Claire Cerda.

That set the stage for the Yerington rally.

Dayton plays crossover games Friday and Saturday in Fernley.

Dayton's Taylor named

team most valuable

Dylan Taylor was named Dayton High's Most Valuable Player and was named first-team all league and sec ond team all-state.

Adan Gomez was awarded Offensive Player of the Year and also made first team all-league. Bernardo Macias awarded Most Improved Player. Luke Spencer received hoonorable mention all league along with Evan Lane. Kenny Mullis received the team's academic award.

Carson golfers 3rd at

first tournament

RENO - Carson High finished third in the first league tournament of the season Monday at Lakeridge Golf Club.

The Senators finished with a 440, 17 shots behind Galena and a whopping 80 strokes behind Bishop Manogue. Douglas was fourth at 443, while Damonte was next at 488. Wooter's team was incomplete.

The Miners were led by medalist Stephen Osborne, who carded a 6-under-par 66. The Miners' top five were all under 80.

Nate Brown shot an 83 to finish 10th overall and lead the Senators. Dalton Butler was next at 85 followed by Danny Manning at 87 and Roman Smokey at 88. Johnathan Parker finished at 97. Sam Bruketta had a non-scoring 99.

WNC schedules

baseball camps

Coaches and players will have an opportunity to learn some of the best development tools out there at two baseball camps hosted by WNC coaches and players.

The first cap is set for March 25 and April 1. The two camp is for kids between 8 and 15. The cost is $40 and it will take place at WNC from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The second camp is April 9-12 at Governors Field from 9 a.m. to noon. The four-day camp costs $50 and will be for kids 8-12.

Pop Warner sets

registration dates

Carson City Pop Warner has announced its sign-up dates and times for the upcoming 2012 season.

Football players and cheerleaders can sign up on April 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Carson Mall. May sign-ups will be held on May 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Carson Mall and again on May 24th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mall.

The last date to sign up will be June 15th from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Governors Field indoor batting facility. Pop Warner is also introducing a new division this year. The Unlimited Division will replace the Midget division and include players 11 to 14 years old weighing 105 pounds and over. There is no maximum weight limit for the Unlimited division.

Tigerharks fare well

in California

Three Carson Tigersharks swimmers competed in the Junior Olympics in San Ramon, Calif. over the weekend.

Abby Pittman competed in three events in the 15-16 year old division - 500 Freestyle (11th place, 5:32.11), 1,000 -yard freestyle (4th place, 11:09.78) and the 1,650-yard free (5th place, 18:55.31). Her 1,000-yard time was a personal best and a Far Western qualifying time.

Dagen Kipling (13-14 year old boys) was 41st in the 100 breast with a 1:15.27. Brett Kolb (11-12 boys) was eighth in the 1,650 free at 21:23.08
