WNC loses twin-bill, chance at conference title

SALT LAKE - Salt Lake wrapped up the Scenic West Athletic Conference title by sweeping Western Nevada, 14-13 and 4-3, Friday in a doubleheader.

The teams conclude the regular season today with a doubleheader.

Salt Lake will now host the SWAC playoffs which start Wednesday morning. The top two teams from the league tournament advance to the District 18 tournament.

In the opener, WNC led 11-4 entering the bottom of the third, but the Bruins scored four in the third, five in the fifth and one in the sixth. WNC scored twice in the seventh to pull to within one run.

Dylan Baker took the loss, allowing 11 runs, six earned, in 4.1 innings, WNC made seven errors.

Zach Hendrix led WNC with four hits, while Rayne Raven added three. Taylor Smart had two hits, including a homer, and Derrick Pitts had two hits.

Pitts worked the first four innings and left trailing 2-0. WNC scored twice in the fifth to tie the game and Cole Ferguson gave the Wildcats a 3-2 lead with a pinch-hit single. Salt Lake scored twice in th sixth off Tyler Spencer to tak a 4-3 lead.

Mike Umscheid went 3-for-4 for WNC.

WNC earns split

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Western Nevada split its Scenic West doubleheader with College of Southern Idaho on Friday afternoon.

CSI took the opener, 7-0, and WNC took the second game, 6-3.

Key pinch hits by Ashley Gleason (one run) and Trinity Thom (two runs) enabled the Wildcats to come back from a 3-2 deficit for the win.

Jenny Quam and Niki DiSera each had two hits for WNC.

In the opener, WNC managed just seven hits in the loss.

PREP BASEBALL

Reno tips Douglas, 5-4

MINDEN - It took an extra-inning win over Spanish Springs from McQueen, but at the end of the day it was enough to propel the Douglas baseball team into the regionals.

Douglas dropped its eighth consecutive game, a 5-4 loss at the hands of Reno but held the tiebreaker over Spanish Springs for the eighth and final playoff spot.

The Tigers took a 3-2 lead when Chase White and Leo Trebotich were each hit by pitches with one out. Weintz again reached on an error which allowed both White and Trebotich score.

Reno went back up on a two-run double in the top of the sixth, but Douglas tied the game again, this time at 4-4, in the bottom half.

Sullivan Cauley was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Dalton Grisell ran for him and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Ketron. Grisell moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Jimmy King.

Reno scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Dayton falls, misses playoffs

DAYTON - Fernley scored six runs in the top of the ninth to snap a 12-all tie and beat Dayton 18-13 in a Northern 3A game.

The loss knocked Dayton out of the playoffs. Dayton finished 8-5 in league play.

The game was tied at 12 after seven. Neither team scored in the eighth, and Fernley scored six and Dayton only answered back with one in its last at-bat.

Mickey Selmi went 3-for-5 and drove in a run, while Michael Saylor went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs.

PREP SOFTBALL

Wooster edges Carson 1-0

RENO - The last time Wooster played Carson, the Senators battered Rachael Howell unmercifully in a 20-2 win.

Howell shook that off and blanked the Senators on three hits in a 1-0 win, which extended Carson's losing streak to four games. The Senators host Douglas today at 10 a.m.

Carson wasted a tremendous effort in the circle by Lindsey Ashbaugh, who struck out four and allowed just two hits.

Wooster's only run came in the fourth inning.

Ashbaugh, Danielle Morrow and hit safely for Carson.

Dayton swept by Fernley

FERNLEY - Dayton needed to sweep Fernley to make the postseason. Doing it without star pitcher Makayla Shadle, who was in Arizona to attend her brother's college graduation, proved to be impossible.

Dayton fell to 11-11 after losing 22-0 and 18-2 to the Vaqueros.

Dayton got one hit in the opener and two in the nightcap .

Douglas beats Reno, 18-8

RENO - Katie Kluever went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead the Tigers past Reno Friday afternoon in a 4A softball game.

Taylor McKinnon drove in three runs for the Tigers, who improved to 11-19 overall and 8-11 league.
