Portable classrooms that are no longer needed at Eagle Valley Middle School and Empire Elementary School will be given to nearby school districts, school board trustees voted Tuesday.
Keith Shaffer, bond projects manager for the Carson City School District, said several options were considered.
"Given the age and depreciation, the portables we have are of very little value," he said.
From the bond passed in last year's election, Eagle Valley and Empire are both in the process of being renovated.
The 11 portable classrooms at those sites will be replaced with actual buildings. While one of those classrooms will be moved to the Gleason Complex to house the Students in Transition program, the remainder will need to be removed.
Shaffer said the cost of disposing of them would be greater than their worth.
"Just moving that one portable cost us $10,000," he said. "That would be about $100,000 just to take them to the dump, and that's before dump fees."
As part of the agreement with the other districts, he said, those districts would pay for the cost of removing the portable buildings.
