Former students and staff are invited to participate in Mark Twain Elementary School's 20th anniversary celebration, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school.
"Mark Twain has done a great job of educating students here in Carson City for 20 years," said principal Laura Austin. "It's a milestone we should celebrate. We are going to take a little time to pause and recognize that."
She said she has some members of the staff who have worked at the school since it opened and who remember when the library had no books and children were instructed to pick up old nails at recess.
Over the years, Austin said, she estimates that about 2,000 students have attended Mark Twain Elementary School.
"That's a lot of people going out in to the world, and well-prepared," she said.
When the school opened, it took the place of the old Corbett Elementary School in Carson City's Northgate neighborhood.
"We're part of the neighborhood," Austin said. "We're surrounded by homes, and it has a really nice feel."
Wednesday's hot dog fest costs $3.75 per person. Those planning to attend should RSVP by calling Mark Twain Elementary School's main office at 775-283-1000.
