The annual Safe & Sober 5K to raise money for Carson High School’s Safe Grad celebration will be 10 a.m. Saturday.“It’s a successful fundraiser for us,” said Sam Sedillos, chairman of the Safe Grad Committee. “It’s something people enjoy. It brings the community together to support a good cause.”The Safe Grad celebration began in 1988 as a way to keep graduation seniors safe and sober. The party begins graduation night at the Carson City Community Center and culminates with a 6 a.m. trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, Calif. The 5K run is the event’s largest fundraiser. The two-loop run begins on the high school track then meanders throughout the campus, finishing back on the track. Sedillos said results will be available online within a half-hour of the finish.Since the inception of Safe Grad, there have been no graduation night fatalities, which Sedillos said is impressive, but also may leave people feeling complacent. “Because it’s been such a successful event, it can be hard to motivate the community,” he said. “The last thing we want is some type of incident to renew interest.”Runners can register online at race360.com or at 8:30 a.m. on race day. Fee is $35. Packet pick-up will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at CV Sports, 3790 U.S. 395 #402.
