Thank you for support of river cleanupOn behalf of the Carson City and High Sierra Kiwanis Clubs, we would like to thank all of you who made the Sept. 15 Carson River cleanup a huge success. This year we again had tremendous participation and support from the Carson High School NJROTC, the BLM, the Boy Scouts, the Nevada Appeal, the Carson City and Sierra Nevada Kiwanis Clubs, the Carson High Key Club, the Carson River Wranglers, Nevada Johns, the Carson City Sheriff’s office and their volunteers, Carson City and the Carson River Advisory Committee. We want to also thank all the individuals and families who came out to lend a hand. We are fortunate that we live in a beautiful place, along the Carson River, surrounded by public lands that we can use, respect and enjoy. It is great to see folks who come to the Carson River clean-up who recognize that with great opportunity comes responsibility to be caretakers of our public lands and the natural places we all enjoy. Thanks again and please come join us in September next year! Ron Bowman, Rob Scanland and Bill Knight Kiwanis Clubs of Carson CityKids Fishing Day was a keeperOn behalf of the Carson City Host Lion’s Club, I would like to thank all those who helped to make the Tom Brooks Memorial Kids Fishing Day held on Sept. 15 a huge success. Approximately 185 kids were provided an opportunity to fish with the assistance of members from the Carson Fly Fishing Club, NDOW and Carson City Host Lion’s. Young anglers also got to try out archery with the Clear Creek Bowmen of Carson City. Because of the many generous donors, all kids were provided with a T-shirt, bait, hooks and a fishing rod if they didn’t have one. There were also raffle prizes that included three beautiful bicycles. Several members of our local Christian Science church attended and were grateful to be included in celebrating fellowship and diversity in our community. It vividly reminded me of vacationing in Maine and attending a "church bean supper," a potluck open to all in the town. Lastly, as a fourth generation Christian Scientist, I was reminded of my grandfather's wise observation, "God doesn't care whether you are a Baptist, Catholic, or Christian Scientist. He only sees all of His sons and daughters made in His image and likeness, very good."I hope to participate in more community celebrations of peace and diversity.Laurel TerryCarson CityCommunity makes book sales successfulThe Friends of the Carson City Library have just had two very successful book sales thanks to generous book donations from our community, hundreds of book buyers and, most importantly, a very large group of hard-working volunteers who spent countless hours organizing books and working during the book sales. Without you, there would be a few less folks able to do their jobs! Our mission is to offer training and testing opportunities for educational interpreters in the state of Nevada. This year, a new administrative code went into effect that requires educational interpreters to pass a written exam. This exam is offered through a national organization that assess and supports educational interpreters. The proctors are local individuals and businesses that provide the opportunity to take the test in a local setting. The Business Resource Innovation Center provided ASL training the necessary technology resources required by our modern testing to provide opportunities for our local interpreters to take this newly required test. The school districts were thrilled that we could offer this test so close to where our interpreters live and work.Again, thank you for being there for ASL Training, LLC and supporting our community. Without the Business Resource Innovation Center I would not have been able to offer the local interpreters the chance to excel right here in Carson City!J Farrell Cafferata-JenkinsCarson CityGreen Living Festival was a huge successThere was a lot of fun and a lot of good information flying around at the Green Living Festival Sept. 15. We’d like to thank the sponsors that helped make it all possible: Megawatt sponsor NV Energy and Battery sponsors Builder’s Wholesale, Comstock Seed, Hungry Mother Organics and EnergyFit Nevada. We also thank Sierra Creek Graphics for designing the poster and ad, Raley's of Gardnerville for supplies for the Discovery Center, and Kim Mileo of Otis Spunkmeyer for cookie dough for the sun ovens. Then there were the awesome volunteers: students from the Douglas High School Environmental Club who were out there setting up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning, students from Gardnerville Elementary School who helped in the Discovery Center, and the “regulars” who help do whatever needs done every year, you guys are the best! And thanks to the exhibitors who buy booth space and spend their whole Saturday out there, and the workshop presenters who also sacrifice their day off to help us offer free information to the public, including the team from Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Fish Hatchery with the Giant Inflatable Fish and live fish tank, Full Circle Compost with their tomato tasting, Douglas Disposal for handling our recycling efforts, Pam Petite for teaching the nature journaling and sketching and Mary Kay Wagner and John Coburn of the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection for demonstrating their watershed model. We have lots of ideas for events like this but not enough time and people to act on them, so if you'd be interested in being a part of bringing sustainable practices to the community, please contact Vicki at vrbates@charter.net.Vicki BatesBoard of Sustainable Living &Renewable Energy Roundup
