PREPS: Dayton soccer teams split

FALLON - Lessons learned and victories were earned.

The Dayton boys and girls soccer teams both lost to Lowry, but picked up wins over West Wendover at the Division I-A tournament on Friday.

In their first match of the day, the Lady Dust Devils fell to the Buckaroos, 5-0, while the boys fell 5-2. The second game, however, went Dayton's way as the club's took on West Wendover, a school is in its first year of soccer.

The Lady Dust Devils rolled to a 10-0 victory, while the boys squeaked out a 1-0 win.

"The thing I like about this tournament is I can see different lineups," girls coach Jared Miklich said. "I don't really care if we win or lose. We were able to get everybody in."

Miklich said the game against soccer newbie West Wendover allowed him an opportunity to play several girls who are new to the sport. The playing time, he said, allows for the girls to find their proper placement on defense, while joining the offensive attack.

"We took all of our new players and put them in," Miklich said. "I was proud of them. They were able to watch how the returners play ... in the first 5 to 10 minutes. I kept two of my returners out there to help direct them."

The boys, meanwhile, were shocked in the first half against Lowry, as the Buckaroos netted three goals in the first six minutes. The Dust Devils rebounded and played Lowry even the rest of the way.

West Wendover, however, presented a stiffer challenge than expected. Dayton was able to score a goal in the first half, and held on defense.

"They actually had some pretty good players and gave us a scare," boys coach Karl Watts said. "The definitely had some surprising players."

As for today's games against Elko (12:30 p.m.), Watts said the defense must be more disciplined.

"I think in both instances (against Lowry and West Wendover) we got a little overconfident. We started to creep up and up and got burned. We need to stay home and cover our bases first."

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson has nice showing at Douglas

Carson freshman Athena Favero finished fourth in her first career race to lead the Carson High freshmen girls. Favero ran in 18:17. Evelyn Delgado was seventh at 19:01 in the meet.

In the sophomore division Shelby Brown led Carson with a 14th place finish (18:52).

In the junior class rate, Alex Drozdoff and Cindy Juchtzer - two of the keys to last year's state championship team - finished second and fourth respectively. Drozdoff ran in 16:47 and Juchtzer ran in 17:21.

On the boys side, Ethan Lopes finished 19th at 16:58 in the frosh race. Ian VanRensselaer was right behind Lopes in 22nd at 17:03.

In the sophomore race, Daniel Jauregui finished sixth in 15:35. In the junior race, Anthony Cacioppo finished 21st in 15:11. In the senior race, Carson was led by Nick Greene who finished 10th in 14:40.

Dayton boys win meet

SILVER SPRINGS - Dayton took four of the first five spots to win the boys race at Silver Stage.

Aaron Elissa won in 18:37 over the 3.1-mile course, Joe Law was third in 19:29, Skyler Rose was fourth in 19:51, Jamie Woods fifth in 20:16 and Nick Langstaff seventh in 21:48.

On the girls' side, Katrina Breithaupt, won in 22:15 and Hanna Elissa was fourth in 27:14.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL

Reno topples Carson

Reno bolted to a 33-0 lead en route to a 41-6 win over Carson Thursday night at Carson.

Carson rebounded in the second half with some nice drives. Elijah Fajayan highlighted the second half with a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Notable freshmen performers playing both ways were Ikela Lewis. Asa Carter, Eddie Duarte, Kevin Rusler, Ian Schulz, Austin Lowe and Victor Castro Jr. who had an interception in the first quarter.

The freshman will travel to McQueen next Thursday for a 5 p.m. game.

VOLLEYBALL

Sierra Lutheran splits

The Sierra Lutheran High School volleyball team beat the Yerington JV team 28-26 and 25-22 on Friday. The Falcons then lost to Smith Valley 25-22 and 25-21.

Leading Sierra Lutheran was McKinze Tynes with three aces and six kills and Jessica Olsen with an ace and seven kills against Yerington.

Against Smith Valley, Emily Fernandez had seven kills.
