PREPS: Drozdoff wins prestigious race

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. - Carson High's varsity cross country teams finished seventh at the Nevada Union Invitational Saturday morning.

Alex Drozdoff won the girls race in 20:04.27, but she was the only Carson girls in the top 20. Evelyn Delgado was 24th in 22:44.70, Shelby Brown was 30th in 23:15.44 and Athena Favero was 31st in 23:27.09. Allison Green was the fifth Carson finisher in 24:52.72. Delgado, Green and Favero are freshmen.

"Alex ran a good race," Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. "She's improved every week. She took 30 or so seconds off her time of last year."

The Carson boys were led by Nick Greene, who was 14th in 17:33.44. Anthony Cacioppo took more than a minute off last year's time en route to 22nd place in in 18:02.80. The next CHS finisher was Tylar Chester, who was 42nd in 18:49.79. Daniel Jauregui was 47th in 18:58.55 and Bryen Holloway was 60th in 19:33.75.

DAYTON SQUADS GO 1-2 IN ELKO

ELKO - Dayton High's boys and girls soccer squads went 1-2 in crossover matches on Friday and Saturday.

The boys beat Lowry 1-0 on Friday with P.J. Vasquez scoring the game's only goal in the 23rd minute.

On Saturday, Dayton lost 2-1 to Elko and 3-0 to Spring Creek.

Vasquez gave Dayton a 1-0 lead against Elko in the first half, and the Dust Devils held that lead until the 70th minute when Elko tied the match. With five minutes left in the match, Elko converted a penalty kick to win it.

The Dayton boys are now 2-2.

On the girls side, Dayton opened with a 3-1 win over Lowry. Maribel Ledezma scored all three goals for the Dust Devils. Savannah Parsons and keeper Muranda Fowler played well defensively.

On Saturday, Dayton lost 8-0 to Elko and 3-1 to Spring Creek. Devon Cates scored Dayton's only goal against Spring Creek.

VOLLEYBALL

MUCKERS SWEEP FALCONS

Virginia City swept Sierra Lutheran 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18 in a Division IV volleyball match on Friday.

Jamie Poston had 12 kills and seven digs, while Corinna Obermayr added seven kills and nine digs. Rielly Strahan finished with seven digs and five assists, and Nicole Huffman added 23 assists.

YERINGTON TOPS BATTLE MOUNTAIN

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Yerington outlasted Battle Mountain in five games on Friday - 19-25, 25-9, 29-31, 25-17 and 15-9.

Savena Rogers finished with 14 digs and 14 assists, while Kassidy Lommori added 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Jesslyna Cochrane had six kills and 17 digs with Chloe Dane chipping in seven kills and 12 digs. Bailee Banta finished with 16 digs.

FOOTBALL

CARSON FRESHMEN WIN

RENO - Asa Carter led the Senators with four touchdowns and nearly 200 yards rushing in the 40-20 win over North Valleys.

Elijah Fayan scored once and had 180 yards on the ground, while QB Victor Castro threw a 25-yard scoring pass and had 57 yards rushing. for 6 with a 25 yard TD in the air and 57 yards rushing. Defensively the much improved defense gave up only one TD and was led by Caulin Bartley who had an interception. Diego Francis, Jesse Knorzer. CJ Chech and Austin Lowe had 5 tackles each.

Carson hosts Reed on Thursday.
