The Nevada Appeal's Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.SILVER DOLLAR: Gerald Bartholomew’s “accidental discovery” is now benefiting the Carson City Library. Bartholomew, who has collected Mark Twain-related items since the 1960, is donating more than 1,100 books and other items to the library.“I’d rather keep it together and have it available for scholars and students, whoever wants to see it,” said Bartholomew, 65, a medical technician at Carson Tahoe Health. “I can’t really use them. I’ve read them all already.”Twain, born Samuel Clemens in Missouri in 1835, first known use of the moniker “Mark Twain” was on a telegraph sent from Carson City. “Samuel Clemens wasn’t born here, but Mark Twain was,” Bartholomew said.WOODEN NICKEL: To Trust for America’s Health’s study released Tuesday that projected by 2030 more than half of people in 39 states will be considered obese. And while Nevada isn’t projected to be one of those 39 states, the national epidemic appears to be getting worse. The Associated Press reports that medical costs for treating obesity-related diseases are likely to increase by $48 billion, to $66 billion per year. Everyone to the treadmill.
