Native to share photos, insights on Carson’s history

Photographs spanning Carson City’s history will be shown and discussed at the Nevada State Museum when native Jed Block shares his insights about his collection. Block will speak 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the museum event called “The History of Carson City in Pictures.”He will discuss changes in the capital city’s landscape and look, ranging both backward and forward in anticipation of the state’s 150th birthday in 2014. Pictures include city streets and the downtown corridor from the 1800s and the 1950s and ’60s. The local historian said whenever he shows the photos, people become intrigued, so he has added his talk to encourage discussion.A third-generation Nevadan and Carson High School graduate who earned a university degree in communications in California, Block serves as chairman of the Carson City Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee. He also is on the Board of Equalization, the Carson City Historical Resources Commission, is active at the Brewery Arts Center and also with the Western Nevada College Foundation.The Thursday show and talk are part of the museum’s monthly Frances Humphrey Lecture Series. Cost is $8 for adults but free for members and children younger than 17. The museum is located at 600 N. Carson St.
