The city of Fallon will conduct its 13th annual Keep Fallon Green next week.

This is a time when city refuse crews collect large items such as appliances and furniture on regular pick-up days as part of a week-long effort capped by a community-wide cleanup by volunteers on Saturday.

Volunteers will meet on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the courtyard behind City Hall and then set out to canvas the community with lists of scheduled pick-up sites in what amounts To a city-wide spring cleaning.

“It’s a wonderful grassroots community project,” City Engineer Jim Souba said. “It’s a week-long project, and just a neat way to get the people involved.”

Volunteers are provided with refreshments before and after the day’s cleanup work. Service club, student groups and residents in general all come together to assist in the effort.

“Everyone meets out in the courtyard and we’ll fill you up with Gatorade, water and doughnuts,” city Administrative Assistant Valerie Swirczek said, adding with a laugh, “then you go pick up trash and work off the donut.”

Volunteers collect pretty much anything on Saturday, including washing machines, dishwashers, broken bunk beds and even cars, she added.

“Normally, we don’t go into houses or that type of stuff, this is the time of year we do that to try and help,” Swirczek said. “We’ve cleared up a lot of places and helped a lot of seniors, too.”
