National Library Week, with its theme Communities Matter @ Your Library, begins tomorrow. The Friends of the Library, who have sponsored this event, exemplify the theme perfectly with their dedication to the Carson Library and to providing services and community activities, from Paula Poundstone to monthly book sales.
The Friends will hold their monthly book sale during National Library Week. There will be a members-only sale from 2-6 p.m. Thursday at the Book Warehouse at 2311 N. Carson St. (behind Denny’s). The event will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The hard-working volunteers have been diligently sorting and organizing the Warehouse for this event, and the proceeds benefit both the library and the community.
Monday: “The Lure of Music, a Human Universal”
Music has many powers. Certain tempos can reduce the sense of exertion and spark motivation when one is exercising. Some research suggests classical music enhances learning, increases retention of material learned and even lowers blood pressure and heart rate.
Fredric Lieberman, professor of music at UC, Santa Cruz, will present an overview of remarkable musical instruments at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium.
Tuesday: Author Event/World Book Night
The Legislature celebrates Nevada Library Legislative Day in Carson City, and communities throughout the world celebrate Book Night. The former acknowledges the influence and importance of libraries, and the latter promotes reading for pleasure and spreading the love of reading, person to person. This year, the Carson Library has combined the two with the selection of Michael Archer’s “A Man of His Word: The Life and Times of Nevada’s Senator William J. Raggio.” The book chronicles the life of one of Nevada’s most influential senators. The author event and reception, which will feature Archer, takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the BRIC on 108 E. Proctor St.
Wednesday: Classical Guitar Night
Nevada/California classical guitarist Larry Aynesmith, Russian/Israeli guitarist Yuri Liberzon and slide guitarist Chakrapani Singh from India will combine their talents for a night of music at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium.
Thursday: Tim Snider and the Sound Society
Musician Tim Snider and his band will give patrons a taste of a variety of cultures, such as Cuba, Morocco, Spain, Indonesia, much of Europe and Central America. This concert, paid for by a grant titled El Dia De Los Ninos, begins at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium and will be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages.
Friday: “Shanghai Noon”
This action film, released in 2000 and starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, is set in Nevada and other parts of the American West in the 19th century. Chan, a Chinese imperial guard, and Wilson, a Western outlaw, join forces to stop a crime. The film begins at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium.
Saturday: Author Terri Farley
Saturday is all about kids and animals. The popular program Love on a Leash, which enables children to read to trained therapy dogs and even a couple of rabbits and receive a free book, will begin at 1 p.m. Terri Farley, author or the “Phantom Stallion Series,” will discuss her books and love of horses at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium.
CCAI Books & Writers Series
In honor of Earth Day, the Capital City Arts Initiative presents writer Laura Cunningham from 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 22 in the library auditorium. Cunningham is both a biologist and an artist, as well as a paleontologist and illustrator. During her visit, she also will give her presentation to art and biology students at Dayton High School and at Douglas High School.
The Library Board of Trustees will hold its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. April 25.
