Field events lift Wave track

In a deep and talented field, the Fallon track teams got all they could handle on Friday.

Competing at the 45th Del Oro (Calif.) Invitational, the Lady Wave placed 12th with 11.5 points, while the boys took 14th with 4.33. In the frosh/soph meet, the Fallon boys placed 14th with 11 points, while the Lady Wave took 17th with two.

The track teams run today in a 6-way meet at 1 p.m. at the Ed Arciniega Complex. Fallon returns to the track at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Yerington.

“It was tough, but we had a lot of kids get PRs (personal records),” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said. “Overall, a lot of the kids improved. It’s good to go see where you are with the big boys, so it was a mental check for us.”

The Lady Wave were led by pole vaulter Maddie Alegre and jumper Elena Murray. Alegre cleared 9 feet, 6 inches and landed in third place, while Murray finished fourth in the long jump (16-4.5) and sixth in the triple jump (31-11). Murray added an eighth-place finish in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.27 seconds.

Julianne Hale grabbed eighth in the high jump at 4-10 and Savannah Lamb came in sixth in the discus with a throw of 99-07.

Patricia Leggett placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 13-4 during the frosh/soph meet. She also took seventh in the triple jump at 28-10.

For the boys, Nick Marsan showed his skills in the hurdles as the senior placed fifth in the 300- (41.36) and seventh 110-meter (15.91) events. Justin Hatfield and Nathan Heck also scored top five finishes in the shot put and pole vault, respectively.

Hatfield landed a toss of 46-1.5, while Heck cleared 13 feet and nearly reached 13-6.

“He’s got a great shot of getting to state,” Steve Heck said of Hatfield. “Quite a few of our throwers had PRs. As a group, they are looking really good.”

In the distance races, Tanner Boone placed 11th in the 3,000, which is 200 meters short of two miles and the event run in Nevada. Boone clocked in at 9:26.99, which Heck said was an impressive time.

“I think that would’ve converted to a really good time in the two mile,” he added.

The sprinters, meanwhile, have not had the times, but Heck said he expects faster times once the athletes begin to taper off toward the end of the season.

“The kids have been working really hard in the cross-fit class … and I think the times will really come down,” Heck said.

In the frosh/soph meet, Tristen Thomson won the high jump at 5-10, while Tyler Wood placed sixth in the pole vault at 10-00.
