The Fallon Cantaloupe Festival is alive and well and will celebrate its 28th birthday this Labor Day weekend.

The festival is also Nevada’s longest running agricultural event.

In recent years, the festival had fallen on challenging times, but in 2010, a nonprofit corporation, Fallon Festival Association, Inc., which is comprised of volunteers, took over the management of the event and has proven to be successful in its efforts to keep this treasured event up and running.

After 2010, the event was able to pay back a private loan and produced a positive cash flow as was the same for 2011 and 2012. The corporation also produces annual event reports containing full financial and statistical accounting to all its sponsors.

“This is a truly special event for Fallon and this event belongs to the people of Fallon. It serves as one of a seeming disappearing real ‘family’ events and we welcome input from our community as to how to keep this event fun and successful,” said a member of the board of directors.

The Fallon Cantaloupe Festival typically draws approximately 8,000 festival goers each year.

This year’s festival will again offer something for the entire family with a combination of food, fresh produce, children’s events and a wide variety of musical entertainment.

To find out more about the festival, people can go to FallonCantaloupeFestival.com.

The festival also is always in need of volunteers. Individuals can pick up a volunteer application at the Fallon Chamber, the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority or the Hair Affair. You can also print out an application online at FallonCantaloupeFestival.com.

You can also check out the festival on Facebook.
