Ride to Lake Tahoe (continued from Tuesday). From Glenbrook to Small’s Station, at the eastern terminus of Kingsbury Grade, is one of the most charming conceivable. The road is fine and so hard you may send your horses over the entire length without straining their muscles once. It runs the entire length of the shore, offering an unobstructed view of the magnificent body of water entire, and marked by Cave Rock and Zephyr Cove (continued Wednesday).

The meteorologist of the Virginia Enterprise says Monitor Valley in Eastern Nevada is situated among mountain peaks show whirlwinds consistent when the wind blows. They aren’t the same as cyclones, but they are strong enough to carry sand and light materials hundreds of feet. As many as six or eight are seen at any time in the valley.

An Elko paper is boasting of the new Meyer Hotel. It will have an automatically operated passenger elevator. The only other three in the state are in Reno, Goldfield and Tonopah.

At one Puget Sound shipyard, the employees get no fancy overtime pay or freedom to go home at night. The yard is at McNeil Island federal penitentiary. The prisoner-craftsmen have launched their third 65-foot wooden patrol tug for the U.S. Army since November. Each launch is ceremonious with a prison band.

50 years ago

You can get so many sardines in a can and likewise only so many prisoners in a jail. Ormsby County’s “can” is busting at the seams.

TRPA officials voted to halt acceptance of building permits in the Tahoe Basin for 90 days. TRPA attorneys issued a legal opinion saying the agency could not process applications because it had not met the Aug. 26 deadline for adoption of the bi-state TRPA Compact.
