The college football season opened Thursday, but University of Nevada fans must wait until Saturday to get a glimpse of their beloved Wolf Pack.

The Pack visit Pasadena, Calif., and take on UCLA at 7 p.m. The game, which is on the Pac-12 Network through DishTV, will be televised at Pizza Barn, 1981 W. Williams Ave.

The Fallon eatery plays host to the Fallon Chapter of the University of Nevada Alumni Association’s tailgate. The group will kick off the festivities at 6 p.m. with raffles and games with the proceeds benefiting scholarships to Churchill County High School seniors who attend Nevada next year.

Sheila Pontius, who is organizing the event, said she expects a sizable crowd to watch the first game of the Brian Polian era. Pontius said fans can treat themselves to numerous food and drink specials.

“I think it’s going to be a big turnout,” she added. “If people are in town, I think it will be a fun evening.”

In addition to Saturday’s event, the alumni group is also hosting a bus trip on Sept. 7 for the Pack’s home opener against UC Davis. The school is honoring former coach and college football hall of famer Chris Ault.

The university will unveil Chris Ault Field at Mackay Stadium and kick off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Seats are filling up for the bus trip, Pontius said, as about 12 tickets are still available. Fallon fans will meet at the Stillwater Plaza (the old Raley’s parking lot) at 3 p.m. The bus will make one stop in Fernley and head to Reno.

The trip costs $25 for season-ticket holders and $50 for nonseason-ticket holders. Each ticket comes with a discount to Silver and Blue Outfitters, while drinks and snacks will be provided on the bus. In addition, a 50/50 drawing and raffles will be offered.

“We are trying to be more social,” she added. “We are working hard to give more scholarships.”
