Funeral services announced for longtime educator Lonnie Moore

Funeral services have been announced for longtime educator and coach Elon (Lonnie) Moore, 71, who died Wednesday from complication following heart surgery.

A viewing will beheld at Smith’s Family Funeral Home on Monday from 6-8 p.m., and services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Fallon Church of the Nazarene.

Moore spent more than 40 years in education serving as a coach, teacher and principal before retiring in the mid-1990s.

A graduate of Churchill County High School, Moore received a master’s degree in education from the University of Nevada. He was an avid basketball enthusiast, playing in high school and college, and as a coach, he led the Virginia City Muckers to numerous state basketball championships.

Lonnie is survived by his wife Janice, sister Cheryl (Dean) Russell, children Tammy (Paul) Slaton, Darin (Valerie) Moore, and Lani (Thane) Fabel. He is also survived by six grandchildren (Rachel, Carmen, Katie, Remy, Ben, and Owen,) seven great grandchildren (Aria, Ayalyn, Asa, Asher, Michael, Devon, and Weston,) and one niece Kim (Steve) Roland.
