The unemployed should continue filing their weekly claims even if the extended unemployment benefits program expires at the end of the year, Nevada’s Employment Security Division says.
Congress has not moved to extend those benefits. If it doesn’t, an estimated 17,000 Nevadans will be immediately cut off at year’s end. A spokesman for the division said an additional 800 claimants would lose benefits each week.
“We are directing claimants to file heir weekly claims until February 1, 2014, so that the benefits can be paid as quickly as possible if Congress does vote in favor of extending the EUC program,“ said Division Administrator Renee Olson.
In the past, Congress has not only voted to reauthorize the benefits but ordered them paid retroactively.
Nationwide, more than 1 million stand to lose benefits if Congress doesn’t reauthorize the extended benefits.
