Carson girls grab two more wins at tourney

SPARKS — Carson High’s girls basketball team completed the High Sierra Winter Challenge with a pair of wins on Saturday.

Carson knocked off Fallon, 55-33, and then followed that up with a 55-20 win over Bishop. Carson went 3-1 in the tournament.

Defense was the key in both wins, according to coach Nate Tolbert.

“In that first game our defense dictated our offense,” Tolbert said. “Because of our defense we were more aggressive at the offensive end. Against Bishop we concentrated on defense and getting our rotations corrected. Against Faith Lutheran and Spring Creek we gave up too many open 15-footers coming out of the 1-3-1. The kids are getting better every game.”

The two wins gives Carson some momentum going into Tuesday’s game at Hug (5:15) and Friday’s home game against Reno (5 p.m.).

Carson rolled to a 32-15 halftime lead against Fallon, and then coasted in the second half. Savannah Smith led Carson with 15 points, while Madison Preston added 11. Ivy Pembrook and Carly Bachmann scored six points apiece.

Smith didn’t play against Bishop after banging her head in the Fallon game. Carson was still productive without her. Bachmann had a career-best 15 points and Preston added 13, nine of those coming on three 3-pointers. Kayla Aikins added eight points, six of those coming in the third quarter.

Sierra Lutheran goes 1-2

AUBURN — Sierra Lutheran compiled a 1-2 record at the Forest Lake Christian Tournament over the weekend.

The locals lost 44-25 to Vacaville Christian, beat Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, 30-27, and then lost to Elliot Christian, 37-10.

Cali Benton scored nine in the win over Western Sierra. Benton tallied eight points and grabbed seven rebounds against Vacaville Christian.

Carson rolls to win

McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — Cameron Price and Alan Cohen combined for 27 points to lead Carson to a 53-32 win in the consolation championship at the 28th annual Rotary Tip-off Tournament Saturday morning.

Carson is 2-1 entering Tuesday’s Division I opener at Hug at 7 p.m.

Price led the way with 16 points and Cohen added 11. Asa Carter chipped in six and Austin Shaffer added five. It was the third straight game that Price had scored more than 10 points, and he was rewarded with a spot on the all-tournament team.

“He took the summer off, and he’s just getting into the flow of the game,” CHS coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “He’ll get better as the season goes.

“I’m pleased with our defense. We’re hustling and willing to get on the floor to get those 50-50 balls. We’re playing hard.”

Dayton finishes second

DAYTON — Bishop edged Dayton, 52-50, in the championship game of the Sutro Classic Saturday afternoon.

Bernardo Macias scored 17 points, Jon Joyner had 12, Austin Fletcher 10 and Steve Thompson eight to lead the Dust Devils, who are 4-1 on the young season.

“It was kind of sloppy by both teams,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “It was our third game of the day. It’s early, and we have a lot of stuff to work on.”

Dayton, by virtue of the tournament schedule, played three games on Saturday. Dayton opened with a 66-32 win over Douglas JV thanks to 18 points by Fletcher and 16 by Macias. Dayton came back with an 83-43 win over Owyhee, as Marcos Saylor led the way with 19 followed by Macias with 16, Fletcher 11, and Ty Pearson and Jeff Brooks added 10 apiece.

Dayton hosts Lovelock in a non-league game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

JV BOYS

Carson goes 2-1

RENO — Carson concluded the Winter Invitational with a 2-1 record.

Carson lost to Lowry 55-47, and then knocked off Galena, 53-28, and Damonte Ranch, 68-28. Cody Azevedo had nine against Galena, while Greg Wallace had 16 against Damonte.

JV GIRLS

Carson 37, Manogue 27

SPARKS — Serena Miller scored 12 points to lead the Senators past Manogue at the final day of the High Sierra Winter Challenge at Spanish Springs.

Carson, 3-0, got seven points from Andrea Maffei. Carson visits Hug at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.
