Weather (continued from Sunday). That on Thursday night, and break-of-day hours Friday, the temperature recorded its coldest since the winter of 1859-60. At Pray’s Lumber Yard, one block east of the Capitol Square, indicated just before sunrise seven degrees below zero. Yesterday the spring had a coat of ice an inch thick and the bread was frozen in the pantry and in the tea kettle. Indications are that we should find even colder this morning.

On Friday morning, Peter Perasich in the fruit business next to Lewis’ Saloon disappeared from this city with the combination to his safe. His partner thought all is not well and got the safe open to find $5,000 gone with only a few bills and a wooden toothpick remaining. It is thought Perasich has little with him as he left it all on the Faro table.

The Jewish Progressive Farmer’s Association of America is seeking help from Nevada State authorities to locate a colony of its people in Southern Nevada.

70 years ago

Gov. Carville said today that a special session of the legislature is not warranted. Sen. Pat McCarran suggested a special session to consider election law changes. Carville said that legislation passed in the 1943 session were adequate to allow servicemen to vote.

50 years ago

Carson High’s honor roll is announced. Sixteen students received perfect marks including: Anne Christensen, Susan Kelly, Madeline Loranger, Jeanne Stevens, Karen Malstrom, Mark Carter, Roberta Sharp, Peter Beck, Mike Marshall, Sonnia Pederson, Nikki Tyler, Cindy Winters, Stephen Jensen, Harold Lloyd, Rex Lott and Janet Richards.

There’s a distinct possibility a high level nuclear dump will be located in Southern Nevada despite opposition by the state.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
