Sen. Don Gustavson, R-Sparks, has introduced a bill that would raise the maximum speed limit in Nevada to 80 or 85 mph.

SB191, he said, would allow the Nevada Department of Transportation to increase highway speeds "on roads it deems safe."

State law sets the maximum highway speed limit at 75 mph. Gustavson mentioned rural sections of interstates 15 and 80 as candidates for the higher speed limit.

Utah and Texas allow higher speeds than Nevada, he said.

The measure was referred to the Transportation Committee for study.
