Steamers Subs and Just Desserts held a soft grand opening Monday in the space just a couple doors south of Papa Murphy's takeout pizza on South Carson Street.

The restaurant features hot sub sandwiches prepared by steaming, a variety of fountain drinks and various desserts. It also provides platters, box lunches side dishes and pies or other desserts for groups and parties off the premises.

This is the first of several, the owners hope.

"I don't think we want to franchise; we want to expand," said Brian Vieira, one of the two owners and the manager of the Steamers Subs LLC.

"We actually came up with the concept traveling across the country," said Andy Ben-Tchavtchavadze, the co-owner.

He said the pair toured the nation and tried to take the best from eateries, but avoid the worst.

Steaming sandwich meats and cheeses while using good breads, they asserted, makes for a fine meal.

Among the desserts offered are pies, cakes, cookies and frozen yogurts for consumption on the premises or takeout. The pies are available either by the slice or the full pie.

New signs are being ordered for the restaurant exterior and the inside decor is a patriotic red, white and blue with steam-oriented art or photographs on walls.

Included is a painting called Queen of the Tahoe, done by Minden-based artist Ric Rose, which shows a steam boat called the SS Tahoe that used to travel the lake, according to Ben-Tchavtchavadze.

The restaurant is located at 4332 South Carson St. For more information visit www.steamerssubs.net.
