Cello presentation, discussion set for July 11 at Carson City Library

The Carson City Symphony Association and the Carson City Library will present “The Making of a Cello” by symphony cellist Becky Crowe at 6 p.m. July 11.

The event will take place in the auditorium of the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. The talk is appropriate for all ages, and admission is free.

Crowe will show the patterns, forms, materials and tools she uses, followed by an informal question-and-answer discussion. Using one of Crowe’s completed cellos, Lou Groffman, principal cellist of the Carson City Symphony, will play a piece to demonstrate the instrument.

After apprenticeships in violin-making with Paul Schuback in Portland, Ore., and in violin repair with Brian Kempton in Sacramento, Crowe has built a bass, two violins, three cellos and three guitars. She built the cello she plays in the Carson City Symphony. She is building a smaller cello that she plans to donate to Strings in the Schools.
