Aces’ Davidson wins HR derby

RENO — Kody Reynolds tried to make it a Hollywood ending to Monday’s Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby at Aces Ballpark.

Reynolds, who graduated in June from McQueen High and will attend Western Nevada College in the fall, came one homer shy of making Monday night’s final round against Reno Aces slugger Matt Davidson.

Davidson, who hit six homers through two rounds, knocked off Memphis slugger Brock Peterson, 4-2, in the final round.

But much of the buzz among the crowd of 8,254 was the performance by Reynolds, who qualified by winning a high school derby. The former McQueen star had an advantage by being able to use an aluminum bat.

Reynolds started with a bang in the opening round, crushing one off the batting eye in centerfield, and after making an out, adding a homer off the video board. He followed with his third homer. After two more outs, he hit another shot off the video board.

In the second round, seven homers were hit. Ernesto Mejia, Davidson and Peterson hit two out, and Reynolds hit one.

Reynolds, who hit second in the second round, started with seven straight outs before hitting his first and only homer of the segment. He came close one other time, hitting one off the wall.

It took a late flurry by Davidson to get past Reynolds. Davidson started with seven outs in the second round before hitting back-to-back homers to left.
