Community sports roundup Tennis camp set for Centennial next week

Diane Baker-Roberts, Carson High tennis coach, is putting on her yearly tennis camp from June 10-13 at Centennial Park.

There are several different age groups she will be working with:

• Kids ages 4-6 will meet from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The cost is $10 a day.

• From 9 to 10:30 a.m. will be kids from 7 and up, both beginning and intermediate level. The cost is $18 a day.

• From 10:30 a.m. to noon is the intermediate-plus class. High school beginners should also be signed up. The cost is is $18 per day.

• From noon to 1 p.m. it will be returning CHS players coming in for a hitting class. The cost is $15 per day.

Pop Warner sign-ups, camps

The Carson Pop Warner program is currently holding sign-ups for the coming season for players and cheerleaders.

To register, go to carsoncitypopwarner.com and look for the registration link. If you want to sign up in person, there will be live registrations from 6 to 9 p.m. June 14 at Governors Field and on June 22 from 9 a.m. to noon during the Battle Born Conditioning Camp. If you are registered with Pop Warner you will get $10 off for the camp. There also is a sign-up from July 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Carson High School during the youth football camp.

Pop Warner is open to players between 5 and 14 years of age. The cheerleading program is for girls 5 to 15.

Wildcats’ fundraiser scheduled

The Nevada Wildcats youth softball organization is holding a fundraising dinner at the Carson Mall featuring award-winning producer and director Steve Perry, whose credits include “The Rock,” three Lethal Weapon movies and “Die Hard.”

The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Carson City BBQ Company is putting on the dinner and music will be furnished by dBellum. There will be raffle prizes and a silent auction.

Trio of aces on the links

Three local golfers — Gary Curti, Karin Pitcock and Tony Barbaria — recently recorded holes-in-one.

Curti’s ace came at Silver Oak on May 21. It was on the par-3 2nd.

Barbaria’s ace came at Empire Ranch On May 29. Barbaria used an 8-iron to ace the 139-yard 5th. Terry Thomas and Jim Zewan witnessed the shot.

Pitcock’s ace came at Silver Oak. Pitcock used a 34-degree hybrid to ace the 90-yard 7th. Tina Luce and Marie Werner were on hand for the feat.

Barbaria quartet wins

Tony Barbaria, Terry Thomas, Jim Zewan and Doug Smeltzer shot a 115 to win Silver Oak Senior Men’s Club 4-man Modified Stableford event on May 28.

Don Fox, Jim Silsby, John Scoville and Freeman Johnson were next at 100. Chuck Tomajko, Jim Reading, Bruce Kozak and Will Keating won closest-to-the-hole honors.

Plymell, Archer triumph

Randy Plymell and Kathy Archer were winners at Thunder Canyon’s recent vent on May 31.

Plymell shot a net 68 to win the Purple-Gold-Whitee tee event. Bob Gates was second with a 69, while Bruce Carl and Mike Schellin tied for third with 70s. Bob Bittman, Butch Cattanch and Burt Clements tied for fith with 72s.

Archer shot a 70 to lead the ladies. Barbara Plymell and Elaine Easterling were next at 71, followed by Shirley Westfall 73 and Kathy Cockerill at 74.

Westfall, Schellin and Paul Ricciardi were closest-to-the-hole winners.

Swann wins at Empire Ranch

Geoff Swann shot a net 64 to win Flight A at the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club stroke play event on May 29.

Terry Thomas was second with a 66, while Henry Ortiz was another shot back at 67.

Bob Pitcock, Carl Slate and Nils Sharp tied for Flight B honors with 65s. Norm Scoggin won Flight C with a 63, while Paul Lockwood was second with a 65 and Bob Pluth was third with a 66.

Kipling, Redican win high-point honors

Dagen Kipling, 14, and Kennedy Redican, 8, won high-point honors in their age group at the recent Intermountain Classic at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Kipling placed first in the 200 IM and 100 free, second in the 200 free, 200 breast, 100 breast and 100 fly, third in the 400 IM and 400 free, and fourth in the 50 free.

Redican won the 50 breast, 50 back and 100 back, was second in the 100 breast, third in the 50 free, sixth n the 50 fly and 10th in the 100 free.

Eli Everest (17), A.J. Gutierrez (12), Sami Kolb (8), Nick Melsheimer (8), Tallon Rauch (15) and Christian Riley (12) placed in the top three in their age groups. Kaly Branco, Reece Canfield, Michelle Harrison, Jeremy Heaton, Maggie Jessee, Matteas Klatt, Ashley Meyer, Abby Pittman, Brennan Pott, Vanessa Rauch and Bryann Russell were top eight in their age groups.

Soccer camp at Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is hosting a College Soccer ID Camp on June 20-21. The camp is open to eighth grade through high school players. The camp is for both boys and girls and provides an opportunity for players to be coached and evaluated by college coaches in a collegiate training environment.

Each player will participate in training and play in 11 vs. 11 games. The Lake Tahoe College ID Camp is sponsored by Under Armour. The company will provide a training top to each participant. The camp coaching staff consists of college coaches from all divisions of college soccer.

The camp will feature a college lecture and Q and A regarding recruiting, and the entire collegiate academic and athletic process.
