County programs start Monday

The Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department is keeping busy this summer.

The department is offering numerous programs and camps for people of all ages.

Starting Monday, the annual SUMFUN day camp returns and ends Aug. 23.

The camp is open to youths 6-12 years of age and runs from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each week includes a theme, snacks, games, activities, crafts, field trips, swimming and more.

Pre-registration for each week is required and the cost is $85 per week with a one- time registration fee of $15, which includes a T-shirt. Other fees include a drop-in rate of $25, and $25 for the field trips to Wild Island. Full summer pre-payment option is available again this year.

On Tuesday, the Churchill County Boots and Britches program is back for another year of fun. Numerous events like barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending and much more are offered and are open to all ages.

The dates for the program this year are Tuesday, June 25, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 13 and 20. Registration begins at 5 p.m. each night. A registration fee of $3 per person is required, and prices for events vary per age group.

The rock wall will be open to all individuals for open climb times. The wall is open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9–11 a.m.

Cost is $5 per person for unlimited climbing. Evening and weekend hours are available by request. All requests must be made a minimum of two business days in advance.

On the Fourth of July, the popular Picnic in the Park returns at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. The day begins with a parade downtown and leads into the all-day event.

Co-sponsored with the Fallon Chamber and city of Fallon, this event will have something for everyone. Live music, bounce houses for children, a watermelon eating contest, vendors, food and Pioneer Days activities brought to you by the Churchill County Museum will be featured.

The event runs from 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

The annual youth volleyball camp will be held twice this summer — June 25-27 and July 30 – Aug. 1 — at The Gym at Venturacci Park. Jennifer Buckmaster will coach the skills needed to excel in volleyball.

The camp is open to children from grades fourth through seventh, and costs $50 for one session or $80 for both. Each participant will receive a volleyball tank top and volleyball. The youth football camp, meanwhile, will be run by the Fallon Youth Football League coaches and staff. The camp runs from July 22-26 at the Churchill County High School practice fields. Players will engage in practice from 5–7:30 p.m. each night. The cost is $50 per person and includes a camp dry fit T-shirt. The camp is open to children ages 5–14.

On the courts, one week of lessons for beginning and intermediate tennis players ages 7-18 runs from July 15-18. Fallon boys coach John Moore will instruct players in game rules, etiquette, serves, forehand, backhand, volleys, lobs and more. Lessons will take place at the CCHS tennis courts and participation is limited. Cost is $45 per person and semi-private lessons are available with a maximum of four athletes per group.

Rounding out the Parks and Recreation’s summer slate is the annual Dust Devil Sprint Triathlon on Aug. 17.

The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and the event takes participants into the Churchill County indoor pool for a 525-yard swim; a 14-mile, no hill, paved bike ride in rural Fallon; and a 2.9 mile run around the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Registration includes a T-shirt, swim cap, water bottle, goody bag full of swag and lunch. Cost is $65.

A team event is included this year for $120 per team, as one individual will compete in each event. Age groups run from 16 years and older for the triathlon and team event. Registration is available at Active.com and at the Parks and Recreation office.
