A Carson City-area woman was sentenced Tuesday in District Court to two to six years in prison for embezzlement and one to 2 1/2 years for defrauding the Employment Security Division.
Barbara Larson, 56, was the office manager at CINC Industries in Carson City for 11 years. Company owners Bret and Gene Sheldon fired her Sept. 24 after discovering Larson, who was responsible for accounts payable and receivable, had made a company check out to herself.
Larson was arrested four days later and reportedly told Carson City deputies that she had a gambling problem and was responsible for taking care of her 87-year-old mother.
Larson later admitted to defrauding the Employment Security Division between Jan. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2012, by failing to report money she’d made while receiving unemployment benefits.
Judge James Wilson also ordered Larson to pay $246,800 in restitution to CINC’s owners and $3,738.00 to the state of Nevada.
Larson’s son Corey shouted an expletive when her sentence was handed down and bounded out of the courtroom. Courthouse security apprehended him, and Wilson sentenced him to 10 days in jail for contempt of court.
Barbara Larson will serve her two terms concurrently.
