Fallon seeing double diamonds

After spending two crossovers away from the Lahontan Valley, both the Greenwave softball and baseball teams return home this weekend.

Fallon entertains Silver Stage on Saturday in the team’s first league contests of the 2013 season. Both teams’ doubleheaders begin at 11 a.m. at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Bill Archer’s softball team (6-5) is coming off two wins in last weekend’s crossover against the Ruby Mountain in Elko. Fallon blew out Elko and Spring Creek by a combined 31-3 but suffered a two-run loss in a state championship rematch with Lowry. The Buckaroos quieted the Fallon bats for a 4-2 win as Fallon finished with only one player with two hits.

But Fallon should be able to continue its hot offensive production with a pair of doubleheaders against the Division III portion of its Lahontan League schedule. In Fallon’s five crossover wins, it has outscored the opposition 67-3, including shutouts against all three Mount Rose teams.

Senior catcher Danielle Rothery is leading the team in batting average with a .517 mark, RBIs with 11 and extra-base hits at six.

Eight players are batting above .300 with Ali Tedford, Kaysee Archer, Shelby Lawry and Kalyn Huckaby in the .400 range. Megan McCormick, who leads the team in home runs with two, is batting .393 followed by Cady Cordes, Paige Thorne and Rileigh Ricken.

Freshman Miranda Ford posts the team’s best ERA at 2.51 even though she’s pitched 22.1 innings. Ricken, on the other hand, has thrown 15.1 more innings as she’s coming into the weekend with a 4.09 ERA. Ricken’s fanned 40 batters in her 37.2 innings.

Lester de Braga’s baseball team hopes to get on track after winning only one game in each of the crossovers.

Fallon posted wins over South Tahoe and Spring Creek before traveling across the Sierra this week for a spring-break tournament in Sacramento. Statistics from the California tournament were unavailable.

The losses against the Ruby Mountain and Mount Rose leagues varied.

Fallon struggled against Truckee before losing by the mercy rule against Sparks two weeks ago in Dayton. In last week’s pair of losses, Fallon nearly came back to beat Lowry as it lost by two but the Greenwave lost to Elko for the second time, both by the mercy rule, this season.

JV team continues hot play

The Fallon JV baseball team beat Lowry, 9-2, and Spring Creek, 13-1, in the Ruby Mountain crossover last week. The Wave, though, fell to Elko, 4-1.

Fallon’s next home game is April 10 against Dayton.

The Wave opened the season with a seven-game winning streak. Fallon opened the season with a 13-3 win over Douglas then beat Truckee, 13-7.

The Wave clobbered Wooster, 33-1, knocked off Carson, 8-4. South Tahoe was no match either as Fallon rolled, 16-4.

Fallon dropped Truckee again, 8-3, and pounded Sparks, 25-1.
