Projections suggest 112 jobs are coming to Carson City, said Maurice Washington, former state senator and current deputy director at the Northern Nevada Development Authority.
Washington, in a report to the Board of Supervisors, said the authority serving the city and nearby counties estimates those projections also mean 202 indirect jobs additionally and a $47 million impact. The direct jobs are projected over three years, he said.
He also spoke of a campaign financed mostly with money from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development targeting California businesses. The idea is to encourage firms there to consider expanding into Northern Nevada, not necessarily to relocate the entire company here.
“We feel that this makes good sense,” he said, noting many companies have fixed costs and assets where they are now. But they might see wisdom in bringing some operations to a state with a business-friendly climate, Washington said.
The California campaign, he said, is aimed at contacts using direct mail, email, advertisements, direct contact and then site visits to Carson City or the region.
Supervisor Karen Abowd asked about the quality of jobs NNDA hopes to lure. Washington said the authority works toward attracting firms with jobs that are substantial by using a measurement keyed to household income.
