The 16th annual Spring Wings Festival kicks off May 17-19 in Fallon and celebrates the return of thousands of migratory birds to the internationally recognized Lahontan Valley.
The festival offers expertly guided tours of the Lahontan Valley and features a number of experts and activities.
On May 17, a duck-decoy carving workshop with Pacific Flyway Decoy Association is available.
The featured tour on May 17 is the Heavy Metal Birds, a trip to the ‘Top Gun’ Naval Weapons Training Center at NAS Fallon for behind-the-scenes looks at these amazing flying and fighting machines from the flight line control tower; stops include the Navy’s flight museum and nature trail.
On May 18, the featured tour is “People of the Marsh.” Participants will discover the past of this lush valley with a tour of ancient Hidden Cave and rock art sites with Churchill County museum experts. The tour will teach guests how the Paiute people survived in nature for centuries.
Other featured tours include low impact wildlife photography on May 18. Guests will join world-class outdoor photographer Jim Stamates for a morning of classroom and field lessons in how to capture wildlife with a camera.
The Wet ‘n Wild tour features the famous birding hot spots of the Stillwater marsh with expert guides from the Audubon and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science.
Also on May 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. are free seminars, activities and natural resource fair at the Churchill County Fairgrounds multipurpose building.
