A Reno woman was sentenced Monday to three years of probation for forging checks.
Chelsea Roseman, 23, was arrested Aug. 16 in Carson City after she tried to cash a check with a signature that did not match bank records, according to her arrest report.
The charge can be either a gross misdemeanor, with punishment of up to a year in the Carson City Jail, or a felony with a much longer potential prison term and consequent mark on one’s record.
Roseman’s defense attorney, Noel Waters, asked the judge to follow the recommendation of the Division of Parole and Probation and make the charge a gross misdemeanor, which Judge James Russell granted.
Deputy District Attorney Nathan MacLellan argued Roseman is unable to comply with probation, given that she went to California without permission.
“She continuously maintains she was not the party” at fault, he said. “I believe this should be a felony charge.”

A 37-year-old Carson City woman pleaded guilty Monday morning in District Court to embezzling $14,000 from a car dealership.
Cami Luc told investigators in August that she took the money because her mother was in danger of losing her house.
