Lawmakers OK bill aimed to curb youth tobacco use

For the first time, Nevada lawmakers have approved allowing county commissions to bar minors from possessing, using or trying to buy tobacco.

Under SB177, the fine for a first violation would be up to $25, progressing to $50 for a second offense and $75 for a third or subsequent offense. A $10 assessment would be tacked on to the fine.

The minor also could be ordered to attend a tobacco-awareness program. Three or more offenses would authorize the juvenile court to suspend a minor’s driver’s license for at least 30 days and up to 90 days.

There have been several similar attempts in the past, but the proposal always failed to win approval from both houses of the Legislature.
