The Churchill County School Board is hosting a Community Engagement Forum on Thursday from 6:30-9 p.m. at the District Office.

The forum, which is open to the community, is intended to engage residents and find out what the school district can do differently to teach children better.

“The purpose of the forum is to reach out to a cross section of the Churchill County Community and seek input,” said Dr. Sandra Sheldon, superintendent of CCSD. “We will use that information to formulate district goals for the next three to five years.”

Sheldon said an open invitation has been given to parents and community members interested in attending. The Trustees and principals have provided names of specific individuals who they consider key supporters of their schools.

“We would like community members to attend so we’re able to get a different perspective on things, rather than what we get on a regular basis from our staff,” Sheldon added.

The structure of the forum allows community members to interact with district staff and trustees. She said principals will escort the community members to seven different mini sessions where the Trustees will be stationed. The mini sessions include information on the following topics facilities/bond projects, academic achievement/assessment, technology, safety/security, budget/fiscal, community relations, and parent involvement. At the end of each mini session, Sheldon said, participants will be asked for their input.

She also said the forum will hopefully develop a group of community members that will volunteer to be key communicators.

“Those volunteers will be placed on an email list and will receive updates on key issues that impact the district and schools,” Sheldon said. “It is hoped that each key communicator will then forward the information to eight or 10 of their friends, creating a web of communication across all layers of the community.”

Sheldon said interested individuals who want to attend the forum should RSVP to the superintendent’s office at 775-423-5184 or email shyned@churchill.k12.nv.us.
