Storey County officials say an inmate who had been booked on suspicion of driving under the influence apparently committed suicide in his jail cell a few hours later.

In a press release, Sheriff Gerald Antinoro says there were no signs that John Ray Pruitt, 64, of Fresno County, Calif., was suicidal after he was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A corrections officer found the Pruitt dead just after midnight, about 16 minutes after authorities previously checked on him.

Officials from Storey County and Washoe County are investigating the incident. Antinoro said Storey County has strict policies to monitor inmates and it appears that jail employees followed the rules.
