The Churchill County School Board of Trustees met Thursday at its only meeting of November to discuss new projects and budgets for elementary schools.

“One of the questions that was asked at the agenda setting was, ‘What do we need to do to finish the buildings to where we wouldn’t really need to touch them again for 10–15 years?’” said Dr. Sandra Sheldon, superintendent of the Churchill County School District.

The new projects would be added on to the current project list that is currently at $2.4 million. All of the elementary schools will be undergoing further work to meet requirements.

The new projects include Numa Elementary School receiving a single point entrance; E.C. Best Elementary upgrading to American Disability Act (ADA) accessibility and building code requirements and fixing the paving on the sidewalks and asphalt; and Northside Early Learning Center reconfiguring the East Wing for interior access to classrooms and replace exterior corridor doors.

Other business discussed or approved included the following:

Approved the process to notify the board of the surplus items with an original value over $5,000. The superintendent or designee would be responsible to approve the disposal of surplus items.

Approved the disposition of portable buildings at E.C. Best Elementary School and West End Center. An open bidding process will be distributed in some form to nonprofit organizations on a priority basis to remove the portable units and the moving cost will be borne by the bidder. Nonprofits (charter schools, other school districts, churches, etc.) get first priority over items; if they do not bid, then it gets turned over for open (public) bidding.
