The Lady Wave volleyball team picked up a critical league win on Saturday in Lyon County.

Fallon avenged an earlier loss to Fernley as it swept a three-game match, 25-17, 25-19, and 25-20, after dropping a close contest against Dayton last week.

Fallon (2-4 league, 11-8 overall) was more precise at the net in Round 2 against its cross-county rivals.

The Lady Wave committed only six errors in 81 attempts at the net and finished with 24 kills. On the other side, Fernley committed 17 errors in 62 attempts as the Vaqueros finished with 20 kills.

In a three-game loss on Sept. 10 to Fernley at home, Fallon had 21 errors when they attacked while Fernley had twice as many. But the Lady Wave had difficulty converting Fernley’s mistakes into points.

On Saturday, Mary Scholz led a balanced attack against the Vaqueros as she posted a game-high eight kills in 26 attempts for a .308 average. Scholz also dominated from the service line and recorded a match-high five aces.

Evan Matheson recorded six kills (.308), Izzy Thomas added five (.300) and Ali Tedford rounded out the attack with four (.400). Tedford also led the team in assists with a game-high 17 dishes.

Megan McCormick and Thomas highlighted Fallon defensively at the net with McCormick leading the team with four blocks. Thomas had two and Matheson added one.

On Friday, Fallon had the best team in the region fighting for life in the first game of the match.

The Lady Wave battled Dayton to open the first match of the league series at home but fell 25-23. The Dust Devils, though, gradually picked up the pace to distance themselves in the second 25-18, before winning by 10 in the final game, 25-15.

Dayton (7-0, 22-1) hasn’t lost since Sept. 7 when it fell to Yerington during a tournament. The Dust Devils are riding an eight-match winning streak.

Scholz led the team with six kills while Sheila Clifford added four and Matheson had three.

McCormick tallied four blocks to lead Fallon, and Matheson, Scholz and Thomas each had one. Kyla Kincaid finished with a team-high five digs while McCormick had four and Scholz and Tedford each had two. Tedford also dished out 14 assits.

Fallon played Tuesday at Sparks. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Wave visit Pershing County next week before returning home to take on Spring Creek (Oct. 11) and Elko (Oct. 12) next weekend.
