Carson City’s Regional Transportation Commission voted Wednesday to award the contract for a safety median on Fairview Drive from Roop to Carson streets, but weather will delay the project.
The RTC awarded the contract for $90,849.82, plus a contingency amount of about 10 percent, to Nevada Curb as the contractor for a project that will include approximately 990 lineal feet of new and “integrally colored” median curb, guide posts, signs and pavement markings with all work to be handled at night.
“Unfortunately, the weather has turned cold on us,” said Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger, which he indicated will mean the work won’t be done soon. The Fairview Drive stretch has become overburdened with traffic, particularly from east to west, because of vehicles streaming off the I-580 bypass freeway, making that Roop-to-Carson commercial corridor require a median.
Staff recommended Nevada Curb as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder under state law, saying the V&C Construction Inc. bid of $48,965 was determined non-responsive. The project estimate had been $92,000.
Pittenger said the RTC awarded a $228,820 contract, also with a 10 percent contingency, to A & K Earth Movers, Inc., after determining it was the lowest responsive and responsible bidder for East Fifth Street bike and pedestrian improvements between Saliman Road and the freeway. Pittenger said that work can be done yet this season.
It consists of about 12,100 square feet of new asphalt pavement widening, 5,400 square feet of sidewalk, 1,100 lineal feet of curb and gutter, as well as nearly 125 tons of micro surfacing, driveway, storm drainage, striping and signs. Pittenger said the sidewalk would be on the south side of Fifth Street, the bike path on both sides.
