Carson girls blank Wooster, 7-0

RENO — Josilyn Daggs and Sammi Gutierrez scored two goals apiece to lead Carson High to an easy 7-0 win over Wooster in a Sierra League soccer match.

The win upped Carson’s record to 10-1-3 with two games left. Carson hosts Reno Thursday at 7, and then visits Douglas next Tuesday in a game that could decide the top seed out of the Sierra League.

“The girls played well,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “They got into a rhythm. Melissa (Glanzmann) played well. Mayra (Oliveras) did a good job, and Karla (Reyes, regular goalie) went up top and played well as did Josie.”

Carson took a 3-0 first-half lead on two Daggs goals and one by Glanzmann. The goals were her 12th and 13th of the season. Glanzmann has now scored in two consecutive games.

Daggs missed Saturday’s game because she was on her official visit at the University of Idaho. Carson played lethargic soccer and tied Damonte Ranch 1-1.

“Josie is talented, and she’s fast,” Lehman said. “She has great vision on the field.”

In the second half, Gutierrez scored twice, while Reyes and Chantel Torres added one each. It was Torres’ first goal since scoring against Damonte in the first half of the league season.

JV: Carson rolled to a 7-0 win thanks to two scores from Nahim Gutierrez and Mallory Otto. Lauren Hudak, Miriam Torres and Galilea Cid scored one apiece.

CROSS COUNTRY

JV girls place second

SPARKS — The Carson High JV girls cross country team finished second at Tuesday’s league meet at Spanish Springs High School.

Kara Berggren led the Senators, followed by Lake Shank, Lauren Weddell, Tiffany DeRosa and Katie Liemandt. The first five runners were only 49 seconds apart.

Dominique D’Orazi, Kyndra Holloway and Kaylee Gordon were the other CHS finishers.

The boys squad finished fourth. Jackson Taylor led the way with an eighth-place finish. Kiefer Catron was 17 seconds behind his teammate. Konnor Van Worth was 26. Bryen Holloway, Bryant Ramirez and Jesus Lopez rounded out the CHS lineup.

The CHS boys and girls varsity squads will run in the league championship meet Thursday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The first race is at 3 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton sweeps Sparks

DAYTON — The Dust Devils improved to 14-0 and 31-1 with a 25-16, 25-10 and 25-11 win over Sparks Tuesday night in a Division 1A volleyball match.

“I played pretty much my whole bench,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “Madi (Foley) and Ashley (Vickers) didn’t play much.”

Rachel Hadley had six kills, six aces and five digs, while Cheyenne Strong had nine kills and nine digs. Elva Diaz had nine kills and four digs.

Setters Shalia Powell and Peach Cons had 17 and 10 assists, respectively. Kaylee Turner finished with six kills and four digs.

Dayton hosts Fallon Thursday at 6 p.m.

VC sweeps Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE — Niki D’Agostino had 15 kills, six aces and eight digs to lead Virginia City to a 25-17, 25-21 and 25-12 win over Hawthorne Tuesday night.

The win moved VC to 11-2 in league and 18-4 overall.

Nicole Huffman had seven digs and 20 assists, while Shannon Parson had seven kills. Bethany Fuller finished with three kills and five digs.

Winter sports meeting

Signups for winter sports are scheduled for Oct. 28 in the north foyer at CHS.

The meeting will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Athletes need to bring their completed forms, including clearance from the library and finance office.

All returning athletes will complete a form that includes updated information with a parent signature.

New athletes must complete an athletic packet, including clearance from the library and finance office. The forms are available at CHS or www.carsonhigh.com.

Completed forms must be received by Nov. 8. Tryouts for winter sports will begin Nov. 16.
